NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERFour presidents of the United States have been assassinated—in 1865, 1881, 1901, and 1963—each murder seemingly unrelated. But what if those presidents were all killed for the shocking same reason: a clause contained in the United States Constitution? This is the question faced by former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone. When President Danny Daniels is nearly killed in the heart of Manhattan, Malone risks his life to foil the murder—only to find himself at odds with the Commonwealth, a secret society of pirates first assembled during the American Revolution. Racing across the nation and taking to the high seas, Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt must break a secret cipher originally possessed by Thomas Jefferson, unravel a mystery concocted by Andrew Jackson, and unearth a document forged by the Founding Fathers themselves—one powerful enough to make the Commonwealth unstoppable.
Don’t miss Steve Berry’s short story “The Devil’s Gold” and an excerpt from The King's Deception in the back of the book.

Great Historical Story teller!!
I loved the way this story balances an actual assassination attempt of President Jackson, pairs it with the existence of pirates, their secret sea rights, and cryptic cyphers.....then parallel it to a modern day political thriller that involves the President today!! Absolutely fantastic! Ive never read a Cotton Malone novel before but I loved it!

Hard to follow
I love the historical fiction aspect of this book. However, it is very difficult to follow. I wish there was a key to the characters to refer back to. It seems that character just appear without much introduction. Would like to see a little more character development.

Berry doesn't disappoint
Cotton Malone has become one of my favorite characters in the literary world. And anytime Berry teams him up with Cassiopeia Vitt it's a sure winner. Throw in pirates, Danny Daniels, and Stephanie Nelle and it's sure to be spectacular!

Berry does an amazing job of mixing fact and fiction in this amazing adventure story. Pirates, presidential assassinations, conspiracies, and secret agencies...what more could you want? This is a MUST read.

Liked it!
Hard to put down. Except for the seemingly endless cycle of violence and death aspects were believable . The parts that were based on historical fact with the Author's perspective and twist made it very enjoyable . I liked the Author's comments at the end.

Steve, I have loved all your books. The plot moves and the story line is great is in this tale. My only criticism is that you flipped too quickly between stories within the book. After a while it drove me crazy. Please go back to old way of writing.
